How to make a good application

Please register to begin the process of applying for a grant. It's important you complete each section of the application thoroughly and take the time to show our selection panel how you are performing in your chosen endeavour, the results you're achieving, and what your grant will be used for. We're looking for future leaders who can make a difference and who are willing to support their community.

Who can apply for a Grant

A young person aged between 15 and 23 years of age:

  • Who is a New Zealand Citizen.
  • Who has resided in Canterbury or Marlborough for 3 years.
  • Who has demonstrated extraordinary ability, talent, or skill in any area of human endeavour.
  • Who wants to support their community.
Application Criteria

Grants

The Inspire Foundation selection panel will generally use the following criteria to assess Grant applications:

  1. Applications must be from a young talented individual involved in any worthwhile endeavour. It could be an event, project, training, personal development, research, Mãori or Pacifica endeavour, cultural event or focus, arts, science, music, dance, academia, finance, environmental focus, community support, technology, design, educational opportunity, health & wellbeing focus or to participate in sport.
  2. Applicants must be aged between 15 & 23 years of age at the time they apply for a grant. For example: if an application is received for the September round of the Inspire Foundation grants and the applicant is 24 years of age, their application will not be considered, if at the April round the applicant is 14 years of age their application will not be considered, if however the applicant waits to apply and they turn 15 years of age in May of that year they can then apply for a grant in the September round.
  3. Applicants must provide a copy of their birth certificate or a copy of the relevant pages from their Passport (a Driver Licence is not acceptable).
  4. Applicants must have been resident in the applicable region (currently Canterbury or Marlborough) for at least 3 years in the period prior to the application date.
  5. Applicants must be a New Zealand Citizen or have had New Zealand residency for at least 5years.
  6. Applicants should provide evidence to support their request for funding. This may include quotes, schedules, references, testimony, descriptions, invitations, or other written material.
  7. Applicants must be prepared to make themselves available (if required) for an interview as part of the application process.

Grant Criteria

Applicants for a Grant must be aware of the following granting criteria.

  1. Each application will be considered by the Inspire Foundation based on merit, available funding, community benefit and support, and according to the Foundation's policy and criteria in place at the time the application is made.
  2. Grants will not be considered for any retrospective expense. Applications for funding for prior events, projects, training, equipment, items or initiatives or expenses of any nature will not be considered
  3. The Grant must be used for the purpose approved in the successful application within six months of the date the grant is approved.
  4. A Grantee recipient may be asked to prove where grant funds were spent by providing authorised receipts.
  5. Applicants must only use the Inspire Foundation Application Portal at www.inspirefoundation.co.nz to apply for a grant.
  6. Groups or organisations are not eligible to apply for Inspire Foundation support.
  7. Political, religious or lobby causes/activities are not eligible for Foundation support.


Application Terms & Conditions

Grants

Each application for a Grant from the Inspire Foundation will be considered when:

  • The Online Application for Inspire Foundation Support Form IFAF1 is correctly completed, signed, scanned & uploaded to the IF Portal by the applicant.
  • A copy of a printed bank deposit slip or the applicants Bank Account details showing the applicants name and account number is scanned & uploaded to the IF Portal by the applicant.
  • Two competitive quotes (no more than 30 days old) for any item(s) applied for is scanned & uploaded to the IF Portal by the applicant.
  • A financial budget or summary of expenses related to the grant request for any event, project, training programme, equipment, item or initiative is scanned & uploaded to the IF Portal by the applicant. A financial summary of any applications applied for funding made or granted from other sources is scanned & uploaded to the IF Portal by the applicant.
  • A background summary of the applicant’s aspirations and achievements is scanned & uploaded to the IF Portal by the applicant together with a written explanation of the purpose or reason for the grant, including an indication of the applicant’s willingness to live the values espoused by the Foundation and to support the Foundation’s initiatives and how the grant can be used to benefit the applicant & the Community.
  • Two references dated and written within 3 months of the application, in support of the applicant by someone familiar with or involved with the applicant, attesting to and providing evidence or testimony as to the talent, skills and ability of the individual and why they merit the support of the Inspire Foundation, and these are scanned & uploaded to the IF Portal by the applicant.
  • A copy of the applicant’s birth certificate or the relevant pages from their Passport showing, Full Name, Date of Birth & NZ Citizenship is scanned & uploaded to the IF Portal by the applicant. (Note: a Driver’s Licence is not acceptable).
  • The Inspire Foundation expects successful applicants to aspire to live its values, to support the Foundation and to update their own Social Media acknowledging the support of the Inspire Foundation with #inspirefoundation within 30 days of receiving a grant.
  • Successful applicants are required to provide the Inspire Foundation with an update on their progress within six months of receiving a grant. Updates must be at least 100 words in length, include a picture and be emailed to info@marlborough.inspirefoundation.co.nz
  • Successful applicants are required to write one short message of appreciation to a supporter of the Inspire Foundation. The supporters name and email will be sent to the Grantee by the Inspire Foundation (the email may contain some background on the supporter and why they should be thanked.) The appreciation message must be sent within 10 days of receiving the supporters name & email address from the Inspire Foundation.
  • Failure to communicate with the Inspire Foundation and its supporters as required will render the Grantee ineligible to apply for another Grant from the Inspire Foundation.
  • The Inspire Foundation encourages, welcomes and appreciates any form of recognition Grantees can provide.

Grant Categories

Grants will generally be considered if they fall within the following broad categories:

  1. Grants for your participation or involvement in Music, Dance or any related projects, courses or events.
  2. Grants for your participation or involvement in Art, Design or any related projects, courses or events.
  3. Grants for your participation or involvement in Academia or any related projects, courses or events.
  4. Grants for your participation or involvement in Science, Technology, Research or any related projects, courses, developments or events.
  5. Grants for your participation or involvement in an Entrepreneurial or Finance project, activity, course or event.
  6. Grants for your participation in a sporting activity, for equipment, coaching, or an event.
  7. Grants for your involvement in community work, community support, community education, cultural activities, Māori or Pacifica endeavour or any other purpose that is beneficial to the community or any
    section of it.
  8. Grants for your participation in educational or training courses, conferences, self-development or events.
  9. Grants for your participation or involvement in environmental, global warming or global protection projects, courses or events.

Audit & Inspection

Grants are given on the understanding that if any NZ Statutory Authority or the Chairman of the Inspire Foundation Board of Trustees so requests, the recipient shall agree to and participate in any inspection and / or audit. The Inspire Foundation may request copies of invoices and receipts to support applications submitted. If there is a change of circumstances or costs, the Inspire Foundation should be notified in writing.

The grant should be refunded to the Inspire Foundation if:

  • Inadequate audit documentation (accountability documentation) is provided.
  • Actual costs are less than those indicated in the application (unspent funds).
  • Funds are spent other than for the purpose stated in the application.
  • Full funding is received from another source for the same purpose.

Breach or Non-compliance

In the event of breach or non-compliance with any of the Terms and Conditions of the Inspire Foundation being discovered the amount of the grant or scholarship received by the Grantee is forfeit and must be re- paid to the Inspire Foundation immediately.

Method of Payment

The Inspire Foundation will make payment via direct bank transfer to the successful applicant’s submitted bank account number within 4 weeks of application approval.

GST

An allocation made by the Inspire Foundation is made as an unconditional gift and in accordance with the amount of grant & scholarship allocation approved by the Inspire Foundation Trustees. No portion is claimed by the Inspire Foundation as a deduction for GST paid.

If an applicant is GST registered, only the GST exclusive amount can be funded.
