Sophia Nicholas

Touch Rugby

  1. Grantee | April 2025

Sophia has been involved in sports since the age of five, spending countless hours watching her parents participate in various sports, including touch, netball, and rugby.

Both of he4 parents have represented New Zealand in touch which instilled the belief in her that anything is achievable. She has represented Marlborough in touch at U12, U14, and U16 levels, however in 2024 there were insufficient players to form a Marlborough U18 team.

In order to continue playing, Sophia traveled to Christchurch and successfully tried out for the Canterbury U18 girls' team to play at the Youth Touch Nationals. This required numerous trips to Christchurch for training and overnight camps. In 2025, she decided to broaden her touch experience by playing mixed touch in the U21 grade, so tried out for the Nelson U21 mixed team. She was fortunate enough to make that team as well, and they achieved 3rd place in the Open Nationals in February. She has been a member of the MGC touch team since Year 9.

Sophie has achieved Marlborough Girls' College top 10 placing at the New Zealand Secondary School Nationals (24 schools) and Marlborough Girls' College top 4 placing at South Islands Secondary School (16 schools).
