Rugby

  1. Grantee | April 2020

Playing a variety of sports since he was young, Nikau started playing touch rugby at St Mary's school when he was 7 years old. While playing at a high level in rugby (he has trialled for the MBC 1st XV) , softball (selected for ISA U14 NZ Softball team) and more recently athletics (set records in para events of 100m, 200m, Shot Put, Long Jump & High Jump, and was awarded Top Male Athlete & Most Promising Athlete of the Games and received ISPS Handa Scholarship), it is with touch rugby that is Nikau’s first love. He says he enjoys the team environment.

What makes Nikau extraordinary is he was born with Po and Syndrome. This means he has an underdeveloped left arm, is missing his humerus bone and pectoral muscle on the left-hand side of his chest. While he does not consider himself to be disabled, his goal is to attend the Paralympics one day.

Nikau has been selected for the NZ U16 Mixed Touch Team to go to the Gold Coast Tournament in September 2020, he is the first disabled player to be named in a NZ age grade Touch Team. His goals include making the Marlborough U18 Touch Team and to be selected for the NZ U18 team and eventually the make the NZ Touch Team and travel to a World Cup to compete.
